Healthy Relationships = Thriving Students: Preventing Dating Violence and Promoting Self-Advocacy
At 14, Ashley was excited about her first dating relationship. Unfortunately, it became abusive, starting a cycle of unhealthy relationships that would negatively impact Ashley during her entire adolescence – personally, socially, emotionally, and academically. Sadly, Ashley’s story is not unique. In the U.S., 1 in 3 teens will experience dating violence - an issue that surpasses bullying and disproportionately impacts youth. Additionally, 1 in 5 students know someone being abused. This is most commonly, emotional, verbal, and psychological - like jealousy, monitoring, and control. These behaviors impact student mental health, safety, social-emotional well-being, and academic achievement. As a survivor turned expert teen dating violence speaker, Ashley teaches students what a healthy relationship looks like, what to watch out for, and what to do when abuse occurs.
- Education on dating abuse and top red flags to spot
- Qualities of a healthy relationship vs. costs of a toxic one
- How to set boundaries and maintain personal priorities
- Seeking help and tips to help a friend/peer
- *Variations: Sexual assault, consent, bystander intervention skills

Why Don’t I Feel Like Myself? Unpacking Relationships, Abuse, and Assault on College Campuses
As a college student, Ashley faced devastating harm - domestic violence and sexual assault. But perhaps the hardest part was losing herself in the process. This is something students on every college campus can relate to. Whether in their own relationships or those of their peers, toxic and harmful behaviors are all too common. In fact, college-aged students face the highest rates of relationship abuse and violence. Even more troubling, these behaviors are becoming normalized, directly damaging a person's self-esteem, mental health, focus, and goals. Addressing this is not only critical for safety but central to student success.
Ashley’s story inspires, empowers, and leaves a lasting impression – making her a must-have speaker for any campus committed to fostering safe and healthy relationships. This engaging and relatable conversation helps students to recognize red flags, adopt new ways of thinking, and equip them with skills to take action in their lives, on campus, and in their communities.
Customizable key takeaways tailored to your focus; event title to be co-decided:
- Understanding abuse, gender-, and power-based violence on campuses

Be a Lifeline: The Power of Awareness to Change a Student's Path
The majority of youth-serving adults have never been trained on one of the largest issues impacting the youth they serve: abuse. In every community and every classroom, students and children silently experience harm. In the U.S., 1 in 3 teens experience abuse by a dating partner. Recent data indicates alarming increases in sexual violence and online exploitation among middle and high school teens. Further, 1 in 7 children experience abuse or neglect by someone they know, trust, or are in the care of. Despite this high prevalence, these issues are often overlooked by caring adults. Warning signs are often subtle or misunderstood. This lack of intervention leaves youth at risk for further harm, as well as serious short and long term consequences. For many, it also becomes an adverse childhood experience that negatively impacts both their present and future life. Adults play a crucial role in recognizing harm. With improved awareness and simple skills, early detection and intervention can save and change the trajectory of a student's life.
- Education and awareness of how youth and students experience abuse
- Impact of abuse/neglect on academic, social emotional, and mental health
- Crucial role adults play in early detection and intervention
- Red flags to look for, plus simple intervention and referral strategies
- Proactive ways to foster relationships and promote prevention
