MEET ASHLEY

MEET ASHLEY

Hello there! I'm Ashley...

A survivor turned activist and speaker.

I never could have dreamed that the dark struggles my younger self once faced would one day lead me to my purpose. My story and my work are my life's mission... and I'm really glad you're here.

I am a proud survivor of abuse, assault, and complex trauma, and I mean this. At one point, I truly believed I was destined to be a victim, to struggle, to fail in life. My life was small. I never knew there could be more for me. But then, in my healing, everything changed.

Today, I'm an expert in abuse prevention, a national speaker, and Top Youth Speaker®. I'm also an author, activist, nonprofit founder, co-owner of a life coaching agency for youth, and founder of the Blue Hearts Project. And, I'm a journaler, reader, tireless adventurer, self-taught singer and pianist, and am far too entertained by my own puns. When I'm not traveling, I spend most of my time by the ocean, all year-round (even in New England snow). Welcome.

A glimpse into my story...

(A condensed version!)

At just 14, I experienced dating violence and sexual abuse by my very first boyfriend. This began a cycle of abusive relationships and trauma that turned my entire life upside down. I struggled with my self-worth, chose severely unhealthy coping habits, and struggled academically. By 18, however, I was optimistic and eager to start a new chapter. Unfortunately, I still didn't know the warning signs of abuse. I lacked a voice and even my own identity. Soon, I was in another abusive relationship. This one was so damaging that I became homeless, penniless, and was forced to drop out of college by my abuser. I only finally escaped after I was severely physically attacked.

I was at rock bottom, yet here, in the very days that followed my attack, I had a sudden moment of intuition. It's like a voice came to me and gave me the clarity I needed to finally change my life. I saw how I'd let others dictate my life. I saw how many opportunities I'd missed, and how I'd never spoken up for myself. I was fed up. And in an instant, I was determined to turn my life around. I began telling my story to raise awareness. I found leadership opportunities, serving on boards and committees. I won the title of Miss New Bedford, promoting domestic violence awareness during my year. I returned to school... and finally graduated as Valedictorian of my class, 7 years after dropping out! I then built a career in victim services, and the justice system. I launched a nonprofit, and today I'm running this beautiful mission-driven career, leveraging my experiences to serve others and make a difference.

My healing journey that followed was a mix of many scary, unexpected, and ultimately, life-changing experiences. I reclaimed my power by telling my story. I developed skills through various leadership and activist work. I delved into personal and spiritual development. I shifted my perspective on my life and myself, finally. I was able to re-discover and reconnect with the me I was meant to be all along. And today, I am eternally blessed to do the work that I do as a speaker, consultant, and passionate voice for resilience, healing, and social change.

My life as an activist...!

Activism, volunteerism, advocacy, social justice, policy work, and community-building make me come alive. This is even beyond my work to address abuse. I've served on boards, founded and owned a philanthropic theatre company, led Alzheimer's efforts in memory of my mum, have raised tons of money for different charities, and more. If you're curious, have a look on LinkedIn.

A Calling to End Abuse...

My experiences helped me to discover my passion and my purpose. Today, I feel blessed to guide others, speak nationally, and be a sought after expert on the issues of domestic violence, teen dating violence, sexual assault, and bystander intervention.

Outside of my work...

I'm an enthusiast for life now... When I have free time, I spontaneously explore and try new things. I love to travel and love the ocean. In fact, I live in the Ocean State in Newport, Rhode Island - a gorgeous city-by-the-sea. I've taught myself to play ukulele and piano, and I sing. I'm a big sister of three. I love to workout, cycle, and be active outdoors. I was once a bit of a "health influencer" with some press cred still out there for plant-based eating. I love old movie theatres. I have four super meaningful tattoos. I binge true crime podcasts and SVU to relax. And despite my wild love for speaking, if I could do any one thing forever... I'd write.

Oh, and one last thing...

You might see this lady popping up pretty often. She's my beautiful mother, and in 2014, she passed away from a rare and unexplained case of early-onset Alzheimer's. Tragically, she developed it at 48 and passed away 8 years later at the age of 56, right in my very arms. I am constantly re-affirmed of my convictions. Make life count. I proudly published a best-selling memoir sharing this story and the many lessons learned. Not one day goes by that I don't miss her, or wish I could participate in life with her. She's at the root of who I am, and I am grateful. I swear, really, I'm doing it all for her... RIP mom. I love you forever.
